My Dear Reader Letter

Dear Reader,
I am an expecting mother this year, so this is my last quarter until the baby is old enough for day care. This is my third quarter attending EvCC. I am English 98 student who has to do an e-portfolio. I come from a family of seven children born and raised out of Columbus Georgia and the youngest out of them all. I am up here with my loving husband who is in the military and stationed here. I like writing essays as long as I can relate to it, however: in this class I had to learn how to write essays that didn’t relate to me and that made more challenging. They were kind of essay where you had to be able to compare/contrast, persuade, and to define a word. Not only did we have that, but you had to know how to do a good lead-in and thesis. This class has helped me to learn how to not only have a voice but the different tones in having a voice. The only thing that was my weakness was organizing and having a flow of ideas that all come together so the reader can follow. I have improved my organization skills in my writing and I am still getting stronger in that area. This class has taught me how to do that with using different techniques such as writing subjectively or objectively, or using point by point, or subject to subject. As a reader, I am able to give back educated feedback to others about their work. As you continue reading my e-portfolio you will see some of my best work for this quarter that I have done. I am starting off by doing my introduction of the pieces that I will include later on in my e-portfolio. My first piece is called” An Old Wise Tell”, the second piece is called “Pregnancy”, my third piece called “Final Seminar from the book called “The Bean Tree”, and my final piece is called “Coffee and Pregnancy.” I hope you enjoy it and that I all going to say you will have to see the rest for yourself.

Intro to my first piece

My first piece of writing will be my first major writing assignment that is called “An old wise tell.” This was a compare and contrast essay I had to write. I wrote this piece in the middle of April and I choose it because we had to choose a major writing assignment. The paper shows my strength in sentence structure as using transition, not to many run-ons and comma splices. “The first antagonist that Beowulf fought was Grendal, the next antagonist he fought was Grendal’s mother, and the last antagonist he fought was a dragon.”

My first piece called "An old Wise Tell Wise"

There was a poem in the 8th and 11th Century that was named "Beowulf” and later on came out with book and a movie about it. This is a story about a hero of the North Germanic tribe who had to fight three antagonists. Although the two stories have their similarities: I like the original story better than the movie because it has more details.

In the book the first antagonist that Beowulf fought was a monster called Grendal, because he was attacking Herot and its inhabitant. Beowulf ripped off Grendal’s arm and later on Grendal died in his cave under the swamp. The next antagonist was Grendal’s mother, because she wanted revenge for the death of her son. So she went and started attacking Herot and its inhabitants and killed many men that were in there. After that Beowulf came and she grabbed him, and took him down in the swamp and that’s where they fought. Grendal’s mother almost won but Beowulf got the sword that was name “Mere” and chopped off her head and kept it as his trophy. He became a king after he defeated Grendal and his mother. The last antagonist he fought was a dragon that was a gigantic and powerful serpent. They fought and Beowulf got wounded so badly that he died from the battle.

In the movie Beowulf was a flawed man, rather than a standard hero as the book made him seem. Grendal’s mother appeared to him as a beautiful woman offering him fame and power if he would give her another son. Beowulf gave into the temptation. In order for people to believe him he had to bring evidence, and so he brought back Grendal head as proof of his deed in killing Grendal’s mother.
This made a big difference because today generation would think that hearing about him fighting all three of the antagonist would think of it as a boring story, but the changes that they made help the story to become interesting. In the movie they had Angelina Jolie playing as Grendal’s mother in the movie to persuade young teenager boys and men to come see the movie.

In the movie the dragon was the son that Beowulf had with Grendal’s mother but in
the book the dragon was not his son. Beowulf did not sleep with Grendal‘s mother in the book; however, they just fought and Beowulf wins the battle. After that he became the king and then had a dream of the son he had with Grendal’s mother, and the dream was that the son was going to come and attack his land. The next night the dream came into reality he did come and attack his land. In the movie the son, who appears as a golden youth before transforms into a monstrous dragon: after, that he fights Beowulf and the dragon kills Beowulf. However, in the book no transformation takes form because the dragon was never his son.

The changes that were in the movie took out more detail than in the book. Even though the movie was a dramatric different that was not good because people who don’t know anything about Beowulf will get confused about the movie and the book. It good in way that they change it that way you can see the difference and the similarity, but they just switch it around too much. Like the dragon being his son that did not need to be there and this made the movie become even more confusing to people who do not know about the story called Beowulf.

Intro to second piece

My second piece of writing will be another major writing assignment and tr his was done in the beginning of May. This essay was called “the seed” and it was a essay where you had to define a word. I choose this piece because I feel that this paper shows how I demonstrated my ability in writing effectively. This essay shows my improvement on taking out the 2nd person with taken out the you and I and it shows a lot of parallelism in it too with organizing by using unity/coherence, and the flow and order of my sentences and paragraphs. “While being pregnant, there are three stages you go through a first trimester, a second trimester, and a third trimester. As the mother go farther along in her pregnancy, and her stomach get bigger and bigger the baby starts to develop his or her feet, arms, head, and body.”

My second piece caleed "Pregnancy"

What is the definition of being pregnant? Being pregnant is for a female to carry a baby for nine months. This is one bond that nobody can take away from you. Although this is a big change and important phase in your life, it is an excitement adventure to have. In all of the stages the mother have different things that she go through such as always sleeping and getting you may even get morning sickness or running to the bathroom all the time. Being pregnant the mother goes through all kinds of mood swing: one day you may be happy then the next day she could be sad, or that she could even be mean. Some women get their sickness in the evening or at night, but for me I haven’t had it and I am only in my second trimester. There are three stages you go through a first trimester, a second trimester, and a third trimester and your body will go through difference changes in all three of the trimesters.

Being pregnant they go by weeks instead of months in most cases. A woman is supposed to be pregnant forty-two weeks pregnant which are the same as nine months. The first trimester is when you are only one through twelve week and it is the same as one to three months. Around the six to seven weeks the baby begins to develop their brain and nervous system and the legs and arms began to begin to grow. In eight through ten the fingers and toes becomes distinct and the baby muscle will develop enough that it might make a movement. Now when you are eleven through thirteen weeks the fingernails, toenails, the brain will continue to develop, and the vocal cords will also begin to grow. The baby kidneys will begin to function and developed placenta so the baby can get oxygen.

Being pregnant in the second trimester is when the mother is one and this is when the mother is fourteen to twenty-six weeks or four to six months. The fourth month the baby should be about 1o inches long and way about three-fourth pound the baby moves around inside of you. Their eyelashes and eyebrows begin to go grow and the hair appears on their head too. You should gain about three to four pounds, craved certain food pregnancy starts to show. In the fifth month the baby is now twelve inches long and weigh one and one-third pounds. The baby is cover by a cheesy layer that protects the skin. This is when the mother will feel the baby arms and legs and notice certain pattern. Now in the last month of her second trimester which what would be the six month. The baby will weighs at about two to two and halve a pound and he or she is fourteen to fifteen inches long. They can react to noise on the outside, by moving more or getting quiet. This is when they kick, make crying movements, hiccups and they can open and close their eyelids. This is when the mother notice some tighten of the belly which that is called the Braxton-Hicks contraction and the sex drive may change week from week.

Being pregnant in the last finally trimester will be your third one and this mean you are twenty-seven to forty-two weeks or seven to nine months. At the seventh month the baby should measured as about 16 inches long and weigh about 2 and ½ to 3 pounds. They will suck their thumbs, move a lot, kick, and stretch. The body for the mother will be swelling feet and hands. She could feel faint as once she is getting up from lying down. The mother breast should swell also and will be leaking out milk. The eight month the baby should measure about 18 inches long and weigh at 5 ½ pounds and their eyes will be opening and closing. The baby will be in a head-down position. The mother will feel part of the baby through her belly and can finally see it. The mother will have to run the bathroom because the baby head is on your bladder and will have trouble sleeping. Now in the last month once you are nine months. This is where the baby measure at about 20 inches long and weigh about 6 ½ to 71/2 pounds. The bay will be less active because of less space to move. The mother belly will look lopsided as the baby moves his arms and legs. The Braxton Hicks contractions may happen more often and the mother feels tired. The mother will even be anxious or nervous about giving birth.

Once you go to the doctor and you hear your baby hearts and it is beating twice times our heart is beating it is one of the happiest times in your life. Another happy time will be once the mother has to get an ultrasound, and she hears see the baby moving and she gets a picture to take home. As the mother go farther long in your pregnancy, and her stomachs get bigger and bigger and the baby starts to develop his or have feet, arms, head, and body. They start to move and it feels like bubbles in their stomach, and it is an amazing thing. Especially once the mother find out what the sex of the baby is going to be. My husband and I got what we wanted our first child to be which a boy is and his is going to be Jaiden.

Although being pregnant can be a challenge and change it’s something that is beautiful. You never know how your pregnancy will go and the best thing is to wait and see. Every woman is different and their pregnancy will not be the same. It is something that happens to a women and it is fun.

Intro to third piece

My thirds piece of writing is my final seminar project paper from the book called “The Bean Tree” .We did this in the ninth week of school. We had to choose quotes in the book and make question for the quote and explain it in paragraph. I choose this piece because I felt that is was an important quote in the book and I could relate this quote to show my improvement in analysis. This paragraph I did for this quote show my improvement on making judgment, comprehending, and thinking about what the quote means. “Not really, I was a mistake well not really a mistake according to my mama , but an accident. A mistake I guess is when you regret it later" (Taylor pg 259-60).
